How the AHIG Small Business Grant Empowered 20 Cancer Patients Through Look Good Feel Better

When you’re facing cancer, even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Thanks to funding from the AHIG Small Business Grant, 20 individuals undergoing cancer treatment experienced a life-affirming day of care and confidence-building through the Look Good Feel Better program.

This unique initiative offered practical workshops covering skincare, makeup, headwear styling, physical activity, and overall wellbeing—helping participants feel more empowered, connected, and ready to face their diagnosis with strength.

The workshops were designed to address the visible and emotional effects of cancer treatment. Topics included:

• Gentle skincare routines to soothe and nourish.

• Makeup tutorials for restoring self-image.

• Headwear styling sessions to build confidence with hair loss.

• Light movement and wellbeing tips to support physical and emotional health.

Each session was led by caring volunteers who created a warm, supportive environment where participants felt welcomed and seen.

One attendee, Jan, shared her powerful experience:

“I was very impressed with the professional and caring manner of the volunteers. They made everyone feel so welcome. The ladies wearing headscarves all felt very self-conscious being bald, and with a few kind words, all the scarves came off slowly and the ladies all started chatting easily – no longer self-conscious.”

“The makeup session was great. One lady told me she cries every day since being diagnosed but was so impressed that we were all discussing our different cancer treatments, that she didn’t feel isolated. She has never worn makeup, and the look on her face when she put it on—guided by the instructor—was priceless. Everyone made a fuss of her.”

“For myself also, I have used it every day and I am thrilled with it.”

This was more than just a day of beauty tips—it was a turning point. Participants left with more than makeup and skincare skills—they walked away feeling uplifted, supported, and part of a community that understands their journey.

The AHIG Small Business Grant played a crucial role in making this possible, helping to fund a safe, empowering experience for people at a time when they needed it most.

Look Good Feel Better is a charitable program dedicated to helping people manage the visible side effects of cancer treatment. Through free confidence-boosting workshops, it helps individuals reclaim a sense of normalcy and self-esteem.
